Blogging is fast becoming one of the biggest things to hit the internet since the .com. Blog, short for web log, is a place (usually a dedicated webpage) where someone (the blogger) writes about events, people, news, products, and whatever else they feel like blogging about. They post their blog online and invite people from all over the world to read, comment, and click through to other sites using hyperlinked text.
Blogging isn’t just a way to share information online; it can also be a way to get noticed by potential employers and clients. One of the best ways to get noticed and create a name for yourself in the blogging world is to branch out from your own blog and provide posts for guest blogs. Guest blogging is when you’re invited to write and post a blog to a blog that isn’t yours—essentially, you are the guest.
In order to land guest blogging invites, you need to provide content that other blog owners will want to publish on their blogs. That means that you have to write and publish posts on your own blog that shows your skill as a blogger. You wouldn’t go to a dentist who had crooked, stained, and missing teeth would you? And you wouldn’t hand over your most precious treasure to a convicted and unrepentant thief would you? Same principle. Experience, consistency, and a track record of great blog content is the key to being published on the top guest blogs.
A few top guest blogs are:
Unfortunately, not every blog is worth reading.
So how can you write blogs people will want to read? How do you create a blog that will have guest blogging invites flowing in from the top guest blogging sites?
Say Something Worth Reading
You may have an advanced Literature degree from Vassar and have the President’s speech writer on speed dial, but that doesn’t mean you have something so say that people will want to read. For example, there are hundreds of thousands of books in the Library of Congress…you can believe that there are a few hundred that haven’t even been cracked open. Just because it’s written down, doesn’t mean it’s worth the time it takes to read it, or the effort it takes to click on the link.
The most popular type of blogs are opinion blogs, review blogs, and gossip blogs. You can review popular products, dish on the latest celebrity scandal, or share your opinion on important news stories or events—there is a caveat to opinion blogs…
Have an Opinion but Don’t Be Opinionated
No, you may not like the current presidential administration, or you adore a certain controversial public figure—that’s fine, you’re allowed to have your dislikes and loves, but you shouldn’t try to convert others to like or dislike something. Being pushy is the best way to get people to sign off and never sign back on again- and guest blog sites like having people read their blogs, so chances are that if you turn people off, you won’t be invited to the party. Nobody likes a face talker.
Compel Don’t Sell
One of the most important secrets to getting published on top guest blog sites is to learn the subtle difference between compelling readers and selling to readers. Have you ever walked onto a car lot and prayed that the greasy salesman lurching toward you would be struck by lightning? That’s because you know he is coming to sell you something and you are just there to look.
No one likes to be TOLD they want or need something; they want to be gently persuaded, seduced, and compelled. Instead of telling your readers that a product or service is $9.95, on sale today only, and they HAVE TO HAVE IT, you should explain in simple terms the benefits of the product, how its helped others, and how great the price is…never actually sell them something. If they want to know more, you can provide a link that they can click on (this is also a great way to make an income). Compelling people is getting them to think that buying the product was their idea.
Being a guest blogger can be a great career propellant, but it means that you have to produce a crisp and engaging blog.
